938 Anthony Gerrard

Biography

No-nonsense centre-back Gerrard spent most of the 2010-11 season on loan at Hull City, after he fell out of favour at parent club Cardiff City.  He dominated the defensive line for his whole time at the KC Stadium and led by example – qualities that led to Gerrard lifting several player of the season gongs.

Hailing from Merseyside, Anthony is a cousin of England hail-marying starlet Steven Gerrard.  After a youth career at Everton, Anthony spent his formative years at Walsall before switching to Cardiff in 2009.  He spent two years in the Bluebirds’ first team, the second of which was came to a crescendo when they reach the League Cup Final against Liverpool.  With the cousins both selected by their respective clubs, the game was a stalemate that ended in a penalty shoot-out – both Anthony and Steven missed their spot kicks.  This event hit both Anthony and his manager Malky Mackay hard, and he rarely played for Cardiff again.

Following his successful loan spell at City it was perplexing that he didn’t make a permanent switch to Hull, and he stayed in Wales for one more season.  In August 2012 he signed for Huddersfield Town and spent much of the next two seasons in the Terriers’ first eleven.  In 2015 he was loaned to Oldham, and since that time he has two further spells at Boundary Park, as well as a short spell playing for Shrewsbury Town. In August 2018 he was ditched by Oldham amid accusations of fruity twitter activity, and signed for Carlisle United, moving on to Conference side Chesterfield a year later.

Gerrard was capped by Ireland at under-18 level and pledged himself to the senior team, but the call never came to step up to the full international level.
