Biography

Spanish defender Daniel Ayala joined Hull City on loan in September 2010 and slotted into the first team straight away, scoring his only goal for the Tigers in his second appearance against Derby County.  He suffered a head injury early in his time at the KC Stadium and sported a large white bandage on his head for several games.  A hamstring injury sustained in November 2010 curtailed his game time and he returned to Liverpool, his parent club, at the end of December 2010.

Daniel Sanchez Ayala was born in El Saucejo, a rural town near Seville in southern Spain. He came through the academy system as his local side Sevilla, who at the time were competing in the upper reaches of La Liga and winning domestic and European cup competitions. Despite this success, in September 2007 the sixteen year old Ayala elected to leave Sevilla and sign a professional contract at Premier League side Liverpool. After working his way through the youth team system at Anfield Daniel made his first team debut in August 2009 against Tottenham Hotspur and started two Premier League matches during the 2009/10 season.

After spending the first half of the 2010/11 season on loan at Hull City, Ayala joined Championship side Derby County in February 2011 on a loan deal that extended to the end of the season. After his February 2011 Rams debut against Leicester City he went on to make 17 appearances. Ayala left Liverpool in August 2011 having made 5 senior appearances for the Reds.

In August 2011 Ayala joined Premier League side Norwich City, in return for a fee of £800,000. His August 2011 debut against Stoke City was followed two days later by a League Cup tie against Milton Keynes Dons, in which Ayala suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for four months. Returning to action in December 2011, had a run of five starts for the Canaries before an ankle injury sustained in February 2012 ended his season early. In August 2012 Ayala joined Championship side Nottingham Forest on a season-long loan in a bid to rediscover his fitness and consistency. His Forest debut in a League Cup tie against Fleetwood Town in August 2012 was followed by his first goal for teh club in October 2012 against Cardiff City, but injuries again hampered his game time as the season wore on and he scored one goal in 14 appearances during the 2012/13 season. Ayala was not part of Norwich’s first team plans at the start of the 2013/14 season and he left the club in October 2013 having made just 13 appearances.

In October 2013 Ayala joined Championship side Middlesbrough on a three month loan that was converted to a permanent move in January 2014. Daniel found his feet at the Riverside Stadium after his goalscoring October 2013 debut against Doncaster Rovers, though he was still prone to spells out of the side due to ankle injuries and occasional red card suspensions. He was a key part of the Boro squad in the 2014/15 season that reached the end of season play-offs, eased past Brentford in the semi-finals then lost to Ayala’s former club Norwich City in the Wembley final – Ayala started all three play-off ties. At the end of the 2015/16 season Middlesbrough finished second in the Championship table and won promotion to the Premier League, during the 2016/17 season Ayala again struggled with injuries in the top flight as Boro made an immediate return to the Championship. In the 2017/18 season Ayala was back in the first team after an early season injury as Boro lost the May 2018 play-off semi-final to Aston Villa, for the next two seasons Ayala remained part of the Middlesbrough first team squad, captaining the Boro side during the 2019/20 season. Ayala made his final appearance for Middlesbrough on New Years Day 2020 against Preston North End, sustaining another ankle injury that sidelined him for the rest of the 2019/20 COVID19-affected season. He left Boro in June 2020 having scored 23 goals in 216 senior appearances during a seven season spell.

In September 2020 Ayala signed a three year deal at Championship side Blackburn Rovers. He made his October 2020 debut against Cardiff City but injuries soon once again hampered his ability to contribute to first team action. He scored his first goal for Blackburn in August 2021 against Nottingham Forest and was a more regular first team presence in the 2021/22 season as his side briefly flirted with the play-off positions before falling away in the closing weeks. A similar pattern was followed in the 2022/23 season and by June 2023 Ayala had scored four goals for Blackburn Rovers in 61 appearances during a three season stay.

Givena free transfer by Blackburn Rovers, in October 2023 Ayala joined Championship side Rotherham United on a deal that extended to the end of the 2023/24 season. He was unfortunate to be red carded twice in a week during December 2023 and dropped out of the first team picture, leaving the Millers by mutual consent in March 2024 after only 7 appearances. Ayala ended his professional career in the 2024 close season, in October 2024 he played one game for Isthmian League side Potters Bar Town.

Ayala won a solitary Spanish under-21 cap against France in March 2011.
