Biography
Egyptian striker Amr Zaki netted two goals against Hull City when playing for Wigan Athletic in August 2008, encouraging the Tigers to loan him from Egyptian league side Zamalek 17 months later in January 2010. Zaki failed to rediscover any of that previous form and was jettisoned after six scoreless appearances.
Amr Hassan Zaki was born in Mansoura, a large city at the northern end of the Nile delta, and in 2001 started his career at his hometown club. In August 2003 he joined Egyptian top flight side ENPPI SC and during the next two and half years he scored prolifically, scoring 27 goals in 64 appearances. In January 2006 this prompted a big money move to Russian League giants Lokomotiv Moscow but after just two goalless appearances in six months he was loaned back to the Egyptian league for the 2006/07 season, joining Zamalek. At Zamalek Amr rediscovered his form and in July 2007 the loan was converted to a permanent move – in two seasons he scored 25 goals in 54 appearances.
In July 2008 Zaki joined Premier League side Wigan Athletic on a season long loan in return for a £1.5 million loan fee. He scored on his August 2008 debut against West Ham United and by the end of December 2008 he had scored an impressive 11 goals in 19 appearances. His goals dried up as the New Year began and he ended his one season at with the Latics with 11 goals in 32 appearances, amid accusations from Wigan manager Steve Bruce that Amr was far from the model professional footballer. He joined Hull City on a similar half-season loan deal in January 2010.
Zaki returned to Zamalek at the start of the 2010/11 season and quickly relocated his goalscoring form, but after six goals in 15 appearances he suffered an injury in October 2010 that sidelined him for nearly a year. he played few games in the 2011/12 season and when Zaki left Zamalek in July 2012 he had scored a total of 35 goals in 79 appearances for the club.
Amid much speculation of moves back to England, or Turkey, or a possible selection for the Egypt 2012 Olympics squad, in August 2012 Zaki eventually chose to join Turkish Super Lig side Elazigspor. After just 8 appearances in five months Zaki agreed to terminate his Elazigspor contract in December 2012, a month later he returned to Egypt and signed a contract with former club ENPPI SC. However this move lasted a grand total of eight days before Zaki agreed to walk away from a two year contract.
In June 2013 he joined Kuwaiti side Al-Samiya, scoring two goals in 9 appearances before again terminating his contract early in December 2013. He joined Moroccan side Raja Casablanca in January 2014 but immediately damaged his foot in a friendly and left the club in May 2014 without making a competitive appearance. Between August and September 2014 he joined Lebanese Premier League side Al Ahed but his contract was quickly ended due to injury concerns. In January 2015 he returned once again to Egypt and signed for El Mowkaloon, before announcing his retirement from playing in August 2015.
Zaki was a senior international for Egypt from a young age, winning his first cap against Ivory Coast in June 2004. He scored his first international goal in October 2004 against Libya and was a regular international for much of the next nine years. He made 5 appearances in Egypt’s 2006 African Cup of Nations finals campaign that saw them lift the title – he scored in the semi-final victory over Senegal. Two years later he was again prominent as Egypt beat Cameroon in the final of the 2008 African Cup of Nations, scoring four goals in 6 appearances including a semi-final brace against Ivory Coast. When he made his final international appearance for Egypt against Ghana in November 2013 he had scored 30 goals in 63 appearances.
