919 Manucho

Biography

Angolan striker Manucho (or Mateus Alberto Contreiras Goncalves, to give him his full name) joined City on loan in January 2009, to add goals to City’s failing first Premier League campaign.  He contributed two strikes, the one against Fulham providing a last gasp winner that was pivotal in avoiding relegation.

Manucho was born in Luanda, Angola and he cut his teeth with local sides Benfica de Luanda and Petro Atletico.  In January 2008 he moved to Manchester United, and was immediately loaned out to crack Greek side Panathinaikos and then Hull City.

Manucho failed to do enough to secure a further contract at either Manchester United or Hull City, and in 2009 he moved to Spanish side Real Valladolid.  After five years at the Castillian capital he moved to Madrid-based side Rayo Vallecano where he played a leading first team role that delivered promotion to La Liga in 2018.  However he didn’t stick around to have Sergio Ramos kick lumps out of him, switching to suburban Barcelona side UE Cornella in the Spanish Third Division.

Manucho was a regular senior international for Angola between 2006 and 2012, amassing 52 caps and 22 international goals.
