910 Marlon King

Biography

Striker Marlon King scored some important goals for City at the spearhead of Phil Brown’s attack in the club’s debut Premier League season.  While undoubtedly a great goalscorer, King was also a proven bell-end, and his falling out with senior squad members during a team building trip led to his rapid departure.

Starting at Dulwich Hamlet as a teenager, King played for Barnet and Gillingham during his early years, but his matchday exploits were coloured by off-field misdemeanours relating to thefts, violence and motoring offences.  His first spell in prison came in 2002, relating to handling a stolen vehicle.  King appeared to have learned his lesson and spells at Nottingham Forest and Watford saw him score plenty of goals at a higher level,  He joined Wigan Athletic in 2008 but was soon loaned to City in August 2008, the Tigers clearly hoping that King would rediscover his Watford form.

Towards the end of his time at City, King was alleged to have thumped a female student in a London bar.  He was convicted and received an eighteen month custodial sentence, which immediately led to Wigan cancelling his contract.  Following his release King had further spells at Coventry, Birmingham and Sheffield United – his two seasons at St Andrews were full of goals.  In 2013 King was involved in two road traffic accidents that left other motorists injured, and he received a further custodial sentence that ended his professional career.

King played international football for Jamaica, scoring an impressive 12 goals in 24 matches, including a hattrick in 2004 against Haiti.
