892 Jason Jarrett

Biography

Experienced midfielder Jarrett had a fortnight on loan at City in November 2006 and made three starts.

Born in Bury, Jason Lee Mee Jarrett came through the junior ranks at Blackpool and made his Tangerines debut in a November 1998 FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic. He made 4 senior appearances for Blackpool before moving to League Division 2 rivals Wrexham in October 1999. His debut that month against Gillingham, a 1-5 defeat, was Jason’s only senior appearance for the Red Dragons and he ended the season in Dublin playing in the Irish League for Shelbourne.

In July 2000 Jarrett joined his hometown club and League Division 2 side Bury, in two seasons with the Shakers he made 70 appearances and scored five goals, the first of which came in September 2000 against Swansea City. Jarrett was a regular starter in the 2001/02 season as Bury struggled at the foot of the table and in March 2002 he transferred to local and divisional rivals Wigan Athletic for a £75,000 fee. Jason was a regular first team presence in the 2002/03 season as Wigan lifted the League Division 2 title and he retained his place as the Latics narrowly missed out on qualifying for the League Division 1 play-off at the first attempt. A broken leg curtailed his game time in the 2004/05 season as Wigan won promotion from the newly-named Championship to the Premier League – Jason spent January 2005 on loan at Stoke City where he made three appearances as part of his rehabilitation and was used by Wigan as impact substitute for the last three months of the season. By May 2005 Wigan were promoted to the top flight and Jarrett had amassed four goals in 107 appearances for the club.

In June 2005, with his Wigan contract expired, Jarrett joined Championship side Norwich City, reuniting with manager Nigel Worthington who introduced him to first team football at Blackpool. Although Jason started the season in the Canaries first team he soon fell out of favour and joined Championship rivals Plymouth Argyle on loan in November 2005, making 7 appearances for the Pilgrims. He returned to Norfolk in January 2006 and took his appearance tally to 15 before ending the season on loan at another Championship side Preston North End – his 11 appearances and one goal helped the Lilywhites reached the Championship play-offs, which they lost to Leeds United at the semi-final stage. Jarrett joined Preston North End on a permanent deal in June 2006 and started the 2006/07 season in the first team but by the end of August 2006, after just six appearances, he was dropped and three months later he had his short loan spell at Hull City.

Returning to Preston Jarrett was not in the first team picture and in February 2007 he joined Championship side Leicester City on loan until the end of the season, making 13 appearances. Although still on Preston’s books he spent the 2007/08 on loan at Championship side Queens Park Rangers (2 appearances in a three month loan cut short after just three weeks) and League 1 side Oldham Athletic (three goals in 15 appearances). In October 2008 he returned to the Preston first team for the first time in over two years, taking his tally for the Deepdale side to 20 appearances and one goal. In January 2009 he joined League 1 side Brighton & Hove Albion on a short term deal and made 14 senior appearances. In September 2009 Jarrett joined Port Vale, a League 2 side managed by Micky Adams who had signed him for Brighton eight months earlier. He made 13 appearances for the Valiants but dropped out of the first team picture in January 2010. In July 2010 he joined League 1 side Oldham Athletic and made 10 appearances before his release in January 2011. A trial for Rochdale at the start of the 2011/12 season came to nothing and he saw out his 17 year playing career at Conference North side FC Halifax Town (16 appearances), Welsh League side Airbus UK Broughton (11 appearances, one goal), Conference Premier side Chester (32 appearances) and upwardly mobile Northern Premier League Division One side Salford City (four goals in 28 appearances). Jarrett retired from playing in the 2015 close season.

By 2013 he was training to become a referee and setting up a coaching academy. In 2015 Jarrett revealed that during his professional career he suffered from depression. By 2017 he announced he was giving up refereeing and focusing on his Bury-based schools football academy Proball Sport – the end of his reffing days came because despite rising quickly through the refereeing ranks, FA rules meant that he was unable to take control of any match that involved one of his numerous previous clubs.
