Biography
Midfielder general Andrews joined City in 2005, one of several midfielders signed to replace Ian Ashbee during the 2000s. As with most of them, he failed, although in Andrews’ case this was due to an unfortunate injury in his second game for the Tigers that prevented him from getting a foothold in the side. After a few sub appearances at the start of 2006/07 he moved on to Milton Keynes Dons.
Born in Dublin, Andrews cut his teeth at Wolverhampton Wanderers, making his first team debut at 19. He spent five years on the fringes of the Wolves first team, gaining experience through regular loan spells. In 2005 his contract ended and he moved to Hull City.
Andrews spent two seasons in the Milton Keynes Dons first team and developed into a dominant midfield force. In 2008 he moved to Blackburn Rovers and spent two seasons as a Premier League regular for the Lancastrians. After half a season at West Bromwich Albion, Andrews’ career wound down at Bolton Wanderers.
Following his retirement Andrews developed a second career as a thoughtful pundit on English Football League broadcasts. He also worked as Assistant Manager to the Ireland Under-21 side under Stephen Kenny – when Kenny was elevated to the senior squad manager in April 2020 Andrews was appointed his assistant. In December 2023 Andrews joined the cooaching staff at Premier League strugglers Sheffield United but when the Blades were relegated in May 2024 he sought pastures new – in July 2024 he was appointed Set Piece Coach at Premier League side Brentford.
Andrews made his senior international debut for Ireland in 2008, scoring the first of his three international goals in a friendly against Poland. He won the last of his 35 senior caps in 2012. Previously he earned a solitary Ireland under-17 cap in 1996.
