870 Mark Lynch

Biography

Full back Mark Lynch signed for the Tigers in July 2005 but was clattered by Queens Park Rangers forward Paul Furlong 45 seconds into his debut and sidelined for two months. When he returned to the first team he was red carded in his second start against Coventry City and the sense that calamity was dogging him prevailed. He remained in the first team squad for three further months before dropping out of the first team picture in January 2006. Lynch was made available for transfer in June 2006.

Mark John Lynch was born in Manchester and came through the ranks at Premier League side Manchester United, signing a professional contract in 1999. In October 2001 Lynch joined Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone on a season-long loan, making his senior debut later that month against Dunfermline Athletic and compiling 20 senior appearances. When he returned to Manchester United in May 2002 he was an unused first team substitute in the Red Devils final match of the season against Charlton Athletic.

He remained at Manchester United for the 2002/03 season, in October 2002 he was an unused substitute in a Champions League tie against Maccabi Haifa then in March 2003 he made his only senior appearance for the Red Devils when he played ninety minutes in a Champions League tie against Deportivo La Coruna, a match that was a dead rubber because United had already won the group with a game to spare – Lynch scored an own goal in a 2-0 defeat. Mark was an unused substitute two more times during the 2003/04 season, in an October 2003 League Cup tie against Leeds United and a March 2004 Premier League derby against Manchester City. He left the club in July 2004 having made just 1 senior appearance.

In July 2004 Lynch joined Championship side Sunderland, he made his English league debut in August 2004 against Queens Park Rangers and was used irregularly from the bench during the first half of the 2004/05 season. His final appearance for Sunderland was against Cardiff City in February 2005, the last of 13 appearances. he left Sunderland in June 2005 to join Hull City.

Lynch left Hull City in August 2006, initially on loan then days later on a permanent move, joining League One side Yeovil Town. Breaking into the Glovers’ first team at the end of August 2006, he was a regular starter for three months until injury sidelined him for six months. He returned to fitness in May 2007 and played 13 minutes at the play-off final against Gillingham that ended in Wembley defeat. Retained for the 2007/08 campaign, Lynch took his Yeovil Town tally to 36 appearances before leaving the club in June 2008.

In July 2009 Mark joined League Two side Rotherham United, his first season at Rotherham was short lived – he was dropped from first action in January 2010 after 10 appearances – but did yield the only senior goals in his career, an unlikely August 2008 brace against Morecambe. His second season at Rotherham United was more productive, ending in a play-off campaign that saw Mark start all three matches as the Millers eliminated Aldershot before losing the May 2010 Wembley final to Dagenham & Redbridge. He left the club in June 2010 having scored two goals in 38 appearances.

Lynch joined League Two side Stockport County in July 2010 and spent a season and a half with the Hatters. A first team regular during the 2010/11 season, which ended in relegation from the Football League, he took his tally to 41 appearances when he made his final start for Stockport against Gateshead in December 2011. In February 2012 Lynch joined National League North side Altrincham where he made 7 appearances before retiring in July 2012. After football Lynch became a fitness coach in the Manchester area.
