838 Steve Melton

Biography

Attacking midfielder Melton came to City with a strong reputation, having played at a higher level earlier in his career and having been coached by Peter Taylor at Brighton. Melton signed initially on loan during November 2002, but within a few weeks he had transferred permanently. Despite his promise and Taylor’s persistence, Melton’s career at City was not a success and he showed only brief flashes of good form. Melton is, however, forever enshrined in the City record books because in December 2002 he scored the first ever goal at the KC Stadium against Sunderland, for the honour of lifting the Raich Carter Trophy. Melton was a fringe player during 2003/04 and left the club in March 2004.

Melton was born in Lincoln and began his career as a junior at Nottingham Forest. In three and a half years as a professional at the City Ground Melton amassed four senior appearances, in February 2000 he moved to Stoke City. Four months later he was on the move again, landing at Brighton. Here he made 50-odd appearances in two and a half seasons, the majority coming off the bench.

Melton signed for Boston United in March 2004 but again he struggled to win a regular first team slot. He then embarked on a lengthy tour of non-league sides in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire that drew to a close in 2013, while also pursuing a career as salesman in the building industry.
