837 Simon Russell

Biography

City youth team product Simon Russell made two substitute appearances during the 2002/03 season, one in an Associate Members’ Cup game and the other in a League game late in the season. He was unable to break into the first team again as Peter Taylor invested to bring promotion to the club in May 2004 in a far-flung field in Yeovil, and Simon left the Tigers in the 2004 close season.

Russell joined Kidderminster Harriers in July 2004, the club he made his league debut against fifteen momnths earlier, who were managed by former City boss Jan Molby. Kidderminster dropped out of the Football League in his first season but he stayed at Aggborough for another three years, making 142 appearances in all competitions and scoring 15 goals. He moved to Conference National rivals York City in 2008 but made only 24 starts for the Minstermen in two years, having loan spells at Tamworth and Cambridge United. In May 2010 he returned to Cambridge United, another Conference National side, and made 31 appearances before joining Lincoln City in July 2011. The Red Imps had just been relegated to the Conference and Russell was by now a well-established player capable of improving sides in the English fifth tier. He made 30 appearances in total for Lincoln before joining Alfreton Town for the 2012/13 season. In 2013 he began his association with Gainsborough, which lasted seven years until he left in May 2020, though he did have 18 months at North Ferriby United between June 2016 and January 2018. Simon made over 200 appearances for Gainsborough before he joined Tadcaster Albion for the 2020/21 season, where he was appointed club captain. In June 2022 he left Tadcaster and retired from football.

In 2020 Russell began a PGCE course in York, in September 2022 he was appointed to a PE teaching role at Fulford School in York.
