834 Scott Kerr

Biography

Midfield general Scott Kerr joined Hull City in June 2001 from Bradford City and spent two seasons with the Tigers. His progress was hampered in 2001/02 by a back injury and in the following season he appeared in the first team only once in an Associate Members Cup tie at Port Vale. Kerr moved on in March 2003.

Kerr was born in Leeds and was involved in the Leeds United youth system until the age of 14 when he switched to Bradford City. He progressed through the ranks at Bradford and earned a professional contract in July 2000, two days after his Bantams debut in an Intertoto Cup tie in Lithuania when he played alongside ex-Tigers Aidan Davison, Wayne Jacobs and Dean Windass. He made his league debut in the Premier League in May 2001, the last day of already-relegated Bradford’s season. He was released by Bradford that summer and joined Hull City.

Kerr left the KC Stadium in March 2003 and embarked on a long and impressive playing career in the hinterlands between the Conference National and the fourth tier of the Football League. He first joined Conference side Scarborough and in two full seasons, plus the last two months of 2002/03, he made 97 appearances and established himself as a first team regular. In 2003/04 Kerr contributed to Scarborough’s run in the FA Cup that saw them dump league sides Doncaster, Port Vale and Southend out of the Cup before encountering Chelsea in the Fourtn Round and narrowly losing 0-1 – Kerr scored the equaliser against Southend that set up a Third Round replay victory. During this time he represented the national non-league scene during a number of “England C” internationals.

In 2005 Kerr returned to the Football League when he signed for Lincoln City. He spent five and a half seasons at Sincil Bank and became a mainstay of the club’s midfield during the second half of the 2000s, captaining the side for three seasons. In total he made 248 appearances and scored nine times, though in his final season, 2010/11, Kerr played less frequently and Lincoln dropped out of the Football League. Prior to that relegation Scott was released from his contract and in January 2011 he joined Conference side York City. He helped the Minstermen win promotion to the Football League in May 2012 via the play-offs, although a knee ligament injury sustained in an FA Trophy semi-final against Luton Town meant he missed the Wembley play-off final victory against the same opponent. He remained at Bootham Crescent for the 2012/13 and made 28 more Football League starts. In June 2013 he returned to the Conference with Grimsby Town, where he helped the Mariners reach the Conference play-offs only to lose in the semi-finals. He spent 2014/15 at Bradford Park Avenue, Hyde and Stalybridge Celtic, then had two further seasons at Spennymoor Town and Ossett Albion. He was later an ambassador and player for Supporting Charities FC, a veteran footballers XI. He worked as an insurance agent for Owl Financial.
