Biography

Andrew Byrne joined City in June 1913, at the time he was trumpeted in the local press as a replacement outside left for the departed stalwart Gordon Wright. That isn’t how things worked out for Byrne, who started the first three games of the 1913/14 season for Harry Chapman’s first team before drifting out of the side. By January 1914 he was reported as missing and no longer available to play for the Tigers.
Born in Dublin, and perhaps recommended to the Tigers by another Dubliner in their ranks, Paddy O’Connell, Byrne played for Shelbourne prior to heading to Hull. Byrne returned to Shelbourne for the 1914/15 season than spent the 1915/16 season at Shamrock Rovers, in February 1916 he was selected for a Leinster select side. His career petered out during the remainder of World War One.
Andrew died in Dublin in September 1944, two months before his 50th birthday.
