82 John Pattison

Biography

John Mason Pattison was born at Bedlington in South East Northumberland and came to the attention of several Football League clubs in 1913 while playing full back for Northern Alliance side Bedlington United. He joined Hull City at the end of March 1913 and was introduced to the City first team for the last two League games of the season. Manager Harry Chapman bought Pattison back into the first team in mid-October 1913 in preference to Tigers’ stalwart Tommy Nevins and other than occasional absences he kept the shirt until February 1915, starting 48 times in 59 consecutive matches. A combination of injury and poor form saw Pattison drop out of the first XI after a heavy defeat at Derby and by the time John had recovered fitness and form the Football League had been suspended due to the outbreak of World War One.

Pattison served in the Royal Navy during the War but was regularly available to play for the Tigers in non-senior wartime league games. Between 1915 and 1919 he made 46 wartime appearances for the Tigers, yet when the Football League resumed in August 1919 Pattison was allowed to join Midland League neighbours Scunthorpe & Lindsey United. After one season at the Old Show Ground he joined Bridlington Town, where John was captain for two years until his retirement in 1922. He remained living in Hull and by 1939 he was working in a local distillery. He died in Hull in January 1978.
