Biography

Claudio Adrian Caceres was a left sided winger and attacker who spent the second half of the 2001/02 season at Hull City on a short term contract. He played a few games at the end of season once Brian Little had left the managers’ hot seat, as first Billy Russell then Jan Molby took over at the helm, but he was released that summer.

Caceres was born in Buenos Aires in Argentina but was raised in Perth, Western Australia. He began his career at Perth Soccer Club but in 2000 he came to England and joined Southampton. He had one season with the Saints and failed to make a senior appearance, but made his league debut during a loan spell at Brentford. He had been without a club for a few months when City signed him in January 2002.

Caceres returned to Australia after his spell at City and signed for A-League side Perth Glory, where he stayed for two years. In 2004 he returned to England and had short spells at Yeovil Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Aldershot Town, but he was unable to earn a long term deal and returned to Australia again in 2005. For the next five years he played for A-League clubs in Perth (again), Melbourne (where he won an A-League champions medal in 2007), Gosford and Wellington in New Zealand. Then between 2010 and 2015 he played for several less celebrated sides in Australia, Indonesia and Thailand. His fall down the footballing pecking order did not inhibit his agent from posting a player profile of Caceres in 2012 that described him as an “excitement machine” with “blistering speed and power”.

Caceres’ inability to settle for long at any club was bought into sharp focus in 2019 when he was jailed for drug dealing offences in Perth during 2017, at a time when he was on bail for breaching a violence restraining order. In the aftermath of these unfortunate events Caceres opened up about his drug addiction and admitted he had regularly used methamphetamine (aka crystal meth or ice) since 2003.
