786 Phil Brumwell

Biography

Midfielder Phil Brumwell was one of Brian Little’s summer signings at the start of the manager’s first full season at Hull City, Little’s connections with fomer club Darlington no doubt led to his interest in Brumwell – the random approach to owning a football club adopted by Darlo chairman George Reynolds was perhaps another factor behind the move. Phil started two games and came on as substitute for four more but after a League Cup defeat at Notts County he dropped out of the City side and by November 2000 he had returned to Darlington.

Born in Newton Aycliffe, a County Durham new town between Darlington and Durham City, Brumwell played regularly as goalscoring attacking midfilder for the County youth team and joined the Sunderland youth team system as a teenager. He had a year as a professional in the 1994/95 season before leaving to join Darlington in the 1995 close season. He made his debut against Exeter in August 1995 and scored his first goal for the Quakers in popular circumstances – a November 1995 FA Cup tie victory over Darlo’s local rivals Hartlepool United. His first season at Feethams ended in a play-off final after defeating Hereford United in the semi-finals – but opponents Plymouth Argyle prevailed at Wembley and Phil’s first season of senior football ended in disappointment.

For the next three seasons Brumwell was a regular first team presence at Feethams, splitting his time between right back and deep-lying central midfielder. He played less regularly in the 1999/00 season as Darlington again reached the play-offs, Phil was chosen at right back for the two semi-final victories over rivals Hartlepool but was an unused substitute in the final at Wembley where the Quakers again missed out on promotion, this time to Peterborough United. Brumwell left Darlington that summer having scored three goals in 185 senior appearances.

Returning to Darlington in November 2000, Brumwell made another 53 senior appearances over two seasons, scoring one further goal. He dropped into the North East non-league scene in 2002 and played another 10 years of football at the semi-professional level. He was player-manager at Whitby Town during the 2007/08 season and in his later years he was player-coach at Shildon, hanging up his boots in 2012 to focus on coaching duties. He stepped away from Shildon in 2017.
