778 Richard Knight

Biography

Goalkeeper Knight joined City on a month’s loan in October 1999 after first choice keeper Lee Bracey was sent off and suspended. Knight had been coveted by manager Warren Joyce for a while, but on his debut he made a bad error that yielded a goal and he was never chosen again.

Richard Knight hailed from Burton upon Trent and came through the junior ranks at Southern League side Burton Albion, who gave him his debut as a 16 year old – he was sent off within minutes of coming on and that turned out to be his only first team start for the Brewers. Despite such inauspicious beginnings Premier League side Derby County signed him in June 1997 and nurtured him during loan spells at League Division 3 side Carlisle United (6 appearances in March and April 1999), League Division 1 side Birmingham City (1 appearance in August 1999), Hull City and League Division 3 side Macclesfield Town (3 appearances in December 1999). In January 2000 Knight joined League Division 2 side Oxford United on loan and spent the rest of the season at the Kassam Stadium over two loan spells, making 13 appearances as the O’s narrowly avoided relegation.

In June 2000 Knight made his transfer to Oxford United permanent and was first team goalkeeper for much of the 2000/01 season that ended in relegation to the fourth tier. Richard remained at Oxford United for much of the 2001/02 season but made only 3 appearances, taking his tally to 40 appearances across two seasons. He ended the season on loan at League Division 2 side Colchester United, where he made one appearance, the last of his senior career.

After a spell out of the game, Knight was reborn in January 2004 as a non-league goalkeeper at Didcot Town, spending the next six years playing for three Oxfordshire sides. After another four year break he again returned in 2014 before retiring in December 2015.

In February 1997 Knight started one match for the England Under-18 team against Israel.

Knight’s humble claim to fame is that his recall from a loan spell at Carlisle United in April 1999 led to the Cumbrians signing Jimmy Glass on an emergency loan – and two weeks later it was Glass who scored a last gasp winner when coming up for a corner that led to Carlisle’s rescue from relegation and the return of Scarborough to the Conference.
