755 Steven Hawes

Biography

Steven Hawes was a tenacious midfield scrapper who joined the Tigers at the start of 1998/99 season, having already spent a few weeks on trial with the club during March 1998 after his loan spell at Doncaster Rovers was terminated. Hawes was a regular starter in Mark Hateley’s struggling Tigers team but when the ex-England striker was shown the door in December 1998 and Warren Joyce took over as City manager, Hawes was replaced by more experienced players who eventually engineered the Tigers’ Great Escape from relegation. Hawes made his final appearance as substitute in the “Thriller at the Villa” cup tie in January 1999 that paired the clubs 1st and 92nd in the Football League at the time. He remained at City for the opening months of 1999/00 season but did not make a first team appearance and left in December 1999.

Steven Robert Hawes was born in Buckinghamshire but cut his footballing teeth as a youngster at Sheffield United. When he made his Blades debut against West Bromwich Albion in September 1995 he was the club’s youngest ever debutant but over the next two years he was unable to gain a foothold in the first team squad at Bramall Lane and took his tally to just 4 senior appearances. He joined League Division 3 side Doncaster Rovers on a season-long loan in September 1997 but played only 11 games for the South Yorkshire side.

Hawes left City in November 1999 and began an odyssey around the non-league scene. For three years he played Conference standard with Altrincham, making over 160 appearances for the club across two spells bisected by two years at Worksop Town, then bounced around a number of clubs in the Sheffield area.
