714 Gavin Gordon

Biography

Striker Kenyatta Gavin Gordon was born in Manchester and joined City’s academy as a teenager. He was involved in first team matches during the 1995 pre-season campaign when only a few weeks past his 16th birthday and made his debut in the League Cup in September 1995. As the Tigers tumbled out of the third tier in the 1995/96 season under the dead hand of managerial team Terry Dolan and Chris Lee, Gordon was fast-tracked into the first team and he scored three goals in April and May 1996 against Bristol City, Crewe Alexandra and Bradford City, his contributions coming mainly off the bench. Gavin started the 1996/97 season in the City’s starting eleven as support to new signing Duane Darby but injuries and form saw him drift out of first team action as the season progressed. When Mark Hateley took over the reins for the 1997/98 season Gordon was rarely used and he left Hull City in November 1997.

Gordon signed for League Division 3 side Lincoln City in November 1997 with the Tigers receiving a £30,000 fee. He quickly broke into the Imps’ first team during the winter months before being used more sparingly in the last third of the 1997/98 season as the Sincil Bank side won promotion to League Division 2. Gavin was used as a regular starter in the second half of the 1998/99 season as Lincoln slumped to immediate demotion back to League Division 3, for the next 18 months a rejuvenated Gordon, now 20 years old, netted regularly in the fourth tier. When he left Lincoln City in December 2000 he had scored 31 goals in 115 senior appearances for the club.

In December 2000 Cardiff City paid £550,000 for Gavin Gordon’s signature, a remarkable fee for a club competing in League Division 3. Cardiff were heading for promotion that summer but Gavin’s contribution was limited to one January 2001 goal against Exeter City as back problems kept him on the sidelines. Over the next three seasons Gordon continued to struggle for game time as Cardiff continued their rise up the league structure. In October 2001 Gavin scored five goals in a 7-1 Football League Trophy demolition of Rushden & Diamonds, but this was not a sign that the goals were about to start flowing once more. A three month loan spell in the first half the 2002/03 season at League Division 3 side Oxford United was an attempt to reignite the flame, but he scored just once in seven appearances. When Gavin left Cardiff City in July 2004 he had scored 12 goals in 56 appearances across three and a half seasons.

In July 2004 Gordon signed for League Two side Notts County, he was a regular starter for the Magpies during the 2004/05 campaign until injury ended his season prematurely in February 2005. He struggled in the early months of the 2005/06 season and left Notts County in February 2006 having scored eight goals in 39 appearances. Gordon then signed for Conference National side Crawley Town, making 4 appearances before a serious injury kept him out of the game for nearly a year. After a short spell at Cambridgeshire side Histon he hung up his boots and starting work as a postman in the Sleaford area while playing village football. In October 2012 he joined the coaching staff at Lincolnshire League side Sleaford Town and occasionally played for the Reserves over the next few months.
