706 Ray Wallace

Biography

Right back Ray Wallace spent December 1994 and January 1995 on loan at Hull City from Stoke City, as manager Terry Dolan frantically played the loan market in order to sustain a charge towards the play-offs in the face of boardroom impecunity.

Born in Lewisham along with his twin brother and rather more illustrious footballer Rod, Ray Wallace began his career in a Southampton squad that also contained his elder brother and senior England international Danny Wallace. Ray made his Saints debut in October 1988, a game featuring all three brothers, and went on to compile 35 league appearances in three years. In 1991 Ray and Rod both signed for Leeds United, but Ray stumbled as Rod thrived and the defender made fewer than 10 starts for Leeds in three seasons and was a regular loanee. Ray joined Stoke City in August 1994, four months before his loan spell at Boothferry Park.

Ray returned to Stoke rejuvenated and was a Potters first team regular for the remainder of the 1994/95 season and much of the next four seasons, making over 200 appearances in all competitions. He left Stoke in 1999 and had short spells at Scottish side Airdrieonians, then spent a couple of seasons in the North West non-league scene and the League of Ireland before hanging up his boots.

Ray won four England under-21 caps in 1989 but failed to follow his brother Danny into the England senior squad.
