696 Matthew Hopkin

Biography

Midfielder Matthew Hopkin, often called Matty, was born in Hull and raised in Brough. He joined the Tigers’ youth training scheme in the summer of 1991, by October 1991 he had been elevated to City’s Reserves and he was a regular performer for the stiffs for three seasons. Matty made just one senior appearance when he came on as substitute in an August 1993 League Cup tie against Notts County. He was released by the Tigers at the end of the 1993/94 season.

Hopkin attracted interest from Colchester United during the 1994 close season but a trial did not lead to a contract and he joined Goole Town, while also playing FA Sunday Cup matches for local league side Northwood. In January and February 1995 Goole suffered a financial collapse and in March 1995 Matty switched to Lincolnshire side Winterton Rangers, then moved on to North Ferriby United during the 1995 close season. He returned to Goole Town in February 1996, then that summer he gave up the game and joined the Royal Air Force.
