667 David Norton

Biography

Midfield dynamo Norton gave City three and bit seasons of ever-present service during a period of the early 1990s when the club was transitioning from second tier contenders to third tier also-rans. But Norton presided over the City midfield at a time when Terry Dolan’s management of the City was capable of achieving relative successes on a shoestring, and Norton’s tough tackling and creativity were a key part of those successes.

Born in Staffordshire mining town Cannock, Norton came through the Aston Villa youth team and made his top flight debut for the Villa in January 1985. He moved to Notts County in 1988 and contributed to two promotions, but he was a peripheral figure at Meadow Lane and was loaned to City for the later part of 1990/91 season, ahead of a permanent move.

Norton departed Boothferry Park in 1994 and signed for Northampton Town. After two successful seasons at the Cobblers he played one further year at Hereford before retiring from the professional game due to injury. Despite this, Norton gave a further three years service to several non-league sides. He had several spells as manager in the early 2000s at Forest Green Rovers, Gainsborough Trinity and Grantham Town. In 2016 he helped set up the Draper Norton Football Academy, alongside ex-Notts County winger Mark Draper, based on the Clifton Campus of Nottingham Trent University. The academy took on several guises over the following years with Norton also working in Derbyshire school between 2022 and 2023.

Norton won seven England Youth caps in 1983, scoring three goals.
