646 Malcolm Murray

Biography

Scottish right back Murray joined Eddie Gray’s Tigers in March 1989 and slotted into the first team defence. Gray’s tenure at City ended in the 1989 close season and Colin Appleton took the helm, who chose Murray for the first five fixtures of 1989/90 before replacing him with Nicky Brown. Appleton lasted only three winless months before being jettisoned and replaced by Stan Ternent. The new manager took a similar view about Murray to his predecessor, and the Scotsman left in December 1989.

Murray hailed from Buckie on the north Aberdeenshire coast and began his playing career with local side Buckie Thistle. At 19 years old he headed south to Edinburgh and signed for Heart of Midlothian, making his debut for the Jam Tarts in April 1983. He spent six seasons and made 27 league appearances at Tynecastle before joining the Tigers.

Murray joined Mansfield Town in December 1989 and was a first team regular for two years. In December 1991 he returned north of the border, spending time at Partick, Clydebank, Meadowbank and Arbroath before ending his playing career back where it started at Buckie Thistle. After football he worked in the offshore oil and gas industry.
