Biography
John Moore was a six foot centre forward that joined the Tigers in 1988 to spearhead Eddie Gray’s promotion push. The promotion didn’t come, and neither did much of any use from Moore, who was quietly ditched after a dozen or so games and loaned to Sheffield United. That said, he did contribute one goal in a narrow 1-0 home win against Swindon. Thanks John.
Moore came from Consett, an steel and coal town above the Wear Valley, and joined Sunderland as an apprentice and then professional. After making his Black Cats debut in March 1985 he made a handful of appearances in each of the next three seasons, as well as enjoying several loan spells. He left Sunderland in the 1988 close season to join the Tigers.
Moore joined Dutch side FC Utrecht in June 1989, returning to the lower reaches of the Football League a year later. After sliding out of the league and joining Bishop Auckland in 1992, he kickstarted a career renaissance by playing for ten years in Hong Kong
Moore became eligible to play for the Hong Kong national side in 1999 when he was awarded permanent resident status, and won seven caps over two seasons. Not many ex-Tigers can say they’ve been sent off in an international match against Palestine – but Moore can!
