605 Neil Cockin

Biography

Defender Neil Cockin was born in North Ferriby, raised in North Cave and educated at South Hunsley School. He had an unsuccessful trial with Nottingham Forest in October 1980 and joined the Hull City Juniors setup in the summer of 1981. He was given his debut by manager Colin Appleton in a League Cup tie a week before his 18th birthday and signed his first professional contract in September 1983, serving the Reserves and contributing occasional goals throughout the 1983/84 season. He made a second senior appearance in a May 1984 Associate Members’ Cup tie against Sheffield United, which saw several peripheral players used as City’s fixture backlog piled up.

Cockin was not retained by new manager Brian Horton at the start of the 1984/85 season and joined North Ferriby United in October 1984. After one season at Church Lane he briefly dropped down to county league football, playing for Newport alongside his brother Steve, then was involved in the local football coaching scene around Hull and the East Riding for many years.
