561 John Hickton

Biography

Experienced striker Hickton had a month on loan City during the Winter of 1977, scoring a goal at home to Carlisle United in a 3-1 win.

Hickton came from Brimington, a village on the outskirts of Chesterfield, and began his career at Sheffield Wednesday in the early 1960s. In his early years Hickton was mostly deployed as a defender but when he joined Middlesbrough in 1966 he was converted to a forward and in twelve years’ service for the Teessiders he struck 192 goals, finishing club top scorer on six occasions. He had a trademark penalty-taking style that involved beginning his run-up somewhere near Albert Park, baffling goalkeepers across the land as they waited for his arrival. Hickton’s time at Boro came to a close in 1978 and he briefly joined NASL side Fort Lauderdale Strikers. However a broken leg curtailed that potentially lucrative part of Big John’s career and he saw out his playing days at Whitby Town.
