539 Jeff Hemmerman

Biography

Striker Jeff Hemmerman was born and raised in Hull and joined the City apprentice scheme in the early 1970s. His first team career progressed steadily but unspectacularly for three seasons with a debut in the 1973 Anglo Italian Cup and a first goal at Blackpool in April 1974. In 1974/75 Hemmerman made a handful of appearances and had a loan spell at Scunthorpe, 1975/76 saw him play a similar fringe role. In 1976/77 he finally became a first team regular and was top scorer in a squad that defended more effectively than it attacked. In the 1977 close season Jeff decided to leave the Tigers.

Dropping down a division to Port Vale in June 1977, Hemmerman struggled for first team action in a Valiants side that was relegated the following May and he moved on again, joining Portsmouth in May 1978. At Fratton Park Jeff finally found his feet – over four seasons he was a first team regular for Pompey, making 138 appearances and scoring 44 goals. He was the club’s top goalscorer in 1978/79 with 14 league strikes, and scored another 13 league goals in 1979/80 that helped the club to promotion. In 1982 Hemmerman joined Cardiff City and he hammered in 26 goals across all competitions, finishing top scorer for the Bluebirds in his first season just as he had been for Pompey four years earlier. However he suffered a serious knee injury in the last game of 1982/83 season. After nine months out of the game Hemmerman had a brief attempted return to the first team fold, but he made his final appearance for the Bluebirds against Derby County in April 1984 and retired shortly afterwards.

Following football, Hemmerman was a club physio at Cardiff for several years, then set up his own sports physiotherapy and rehabilitation practice in Newport, South Wales which thrived for over 30 years.
