51 Arthur Pace

Biography

Outside right Arthur Pace joined the Tigers in November 1907 and provided first team support and regular reserve service for three seasons. He made two starts in the 1908/09 season, deputising for Joe “Stanley” Smith in November 1908 and February 1909, then added three more starts during the following season. He left the club at the end of the 1909/10 season.

Arthur Pace grew up in Benwell, on the north bank of the River Tyne in western Newcastle Upon Tyne. He was part of a large family led by a father who worked as a machinist in a boot factory. He had two seasons playing for North Eastern League side Hebburn Argyle ahead of his move to Hull City.

Arthur left City in July 1910 and joined Midland League side Rotherham Town, transferring to Southern League side Croydon Common a year later and spending three seasons with the South Londoners. Pace joined for Midland League side Worksop Town in November 1914 then in December 1915 he returned to Hull City fold, playing in 25 wartime fixtures during World War One. He also assisted Brighton & Hove Albion and Southport during the conflict.

After the war Arthur played for Hull & East Riding League side Bridlington Town, where he won the East Riding Senior Cup in 1921 and 1922, then played local league football for Reckitts. By 1939 he was working as a labourer and living off Southcoates Lane in East Hull. Pace died in Hull in February 1968, by which time he had moved to Gypsyville in West Hull.

  1. This was my grandad my biological dad told me all about him. I was adopted at birth and over the past many years I got to know about him.
    I was born in hull and actually now live in the north east. Back to the routes of my grandfather who I am very proud of

    • Hi Liz , I see you are related to Billy Halligan the footballer . My father Mr William Hubert Halligan from Athlone in Ireland was also related to him , my father is 86 and still alive . What age are you ? Catherine Halligan Cuffe
