5 Bill Martin

Biography

Right half Bill Martin was a City pioneer, playing in the club’s first two senior fixtures against Stockton in September 1904. He stayed around for City’s first League season in 1905/06 and began the season in the first XI, but soon dropped out of the side and moved on in the 1906 close season.

Londoner Martin was born in the South London docklands of Millwall and played for local side Millwall Athletic prior to joining the newly-formed Tigers in August 1904.

Martin joined Clapton Orient in May 1906 and converted to a goalscoring centre forward, briefly holding the O’s record goal haul in a season. He spent two seasons back in the capital before moving to the north west to serve Stockport County and Oldham Athletic. In July 1910 Martin returned to Millwall Athletic, his first club. He died in December 1954.
