Biography
Experienced goalkeeper Mick Granger joined the Tigers in July 1962 to support the younger first team goalies Bernard Fisher and Mike Williams. Granger started two games for the Tigers, replacing Fisher in an August 1962 game at Wrexham and a September 1962 game at Swindon – both fixtures ended in City being defeated 2-0. Granger left the club in the 1963 close season.
Michael Granger was born in Leeds and came into league football via Cliftonville – the York-based parks team, not the Belfast based Irish League side. York City took on Granger in December 1951 and he remained with the Minstermen for 11 years, playing a support role for the consistent Tommy Forgan, another ex-Tiger. During those 11 seasons Granger made 71 league starts, a statistic that emphasises Forgan’s consistency and Granger’s loyalty to the Bootham Crescent side.
Granger joined Halifax Town in January 1963 and in his two seasons at The Shay he made just two league appearances and two Cup appearances. In November 1963 Granger started an FA Cup tie at Workington but during the second half Granger broke a finger and, in the era before substitutes, was forced to play up front for the rest of the game. This move evidently didn’t faze Mick, who volleyed in a consolation goal five minutes from time as the Shaymen went down 4-1. Granger saw out his career in the non-league scene, playing for Scarborough and Bridlington Town. He died in York in November 2016 due to complications arising from Alzheimer’s Disease.
