438 Bob Crosbie

Biography

Striker Bob Crosbie was in his prime when he signed for the Tigers in October 1953 to play alongside South African forward Alf Ackerman and fellow Scotsman Syd Gerrie. Crosbie opened his account with a brace of goals in early November against Leicester City and scored further doubles against Oldham (in a 8-0 win with Ackerman adding another four), Brentford in a FA Cup replay and Swansea Town. He missed only one game all season and bagged 15 goals. In 1954/55 he picked up where he finished and missed only one game for the remainder of the calendar year, scoring all four goals in a September 4-2 win over Ipswich. As the season progressed City’s form faded under manager Bob Jackson and Crosbie’s goals dried up. He scored twice in Jackson’s penultimate game, punishing Swansea Town again, but scored only once for new manager Bob Brocklebank who took the City helm in late March 1955. Crosbie left City in the 1955 close season.

Crosbie was born in the Calton district of Glasgow and played for Dennistoun Parish after the end of World War 2 before signing for Bury in May 1947. Crosbie was a fringe player for the Shakers for two seasons but contributed five goals in just 9 starts. This form stood him in good stead when Bradford Park Avenue paid a £11,000 fee for his services in May 1949. Crosbie rewarded Avenue 72 goals in four years, finishing season top scorer in 1951 (with 28 goals) and 1953 (with 16 goals). It was this form that encouraged City to pay £4,000 for his signature.

Crosbie crossed the Humber Estuary in July 1955 and signed for Grimsby Town. His exploits in front of goal continued at Blundell Park where he scored 36 league goals as the Mariners won the 1955/56 Third Division North championship. He scored another 9 league goals in the Second Division in 1956/57 before heading back north of the border in August 1957 to sign for Queen of the South, where he continued his goal every two games standard before ending his playing days in 1958. Crosbie returned to Glasgow and died in February 1994.
