430 Cliff Bursell

Biography

Striker John Clifford “Cliff” Bursell was two months shy of his 18th birthday when he made his City senior debut in November 1952, selected by manager Bob Jackson to fill in for Eddie Burbanks. Playing at St Andrews, the Tigers were defeated 3-4 by Birmingham City but Bursell scored twice, announcing himself to the senior stage in the grand fashion. He played the next game at home to Bury, a 0-2 defeat, then dropped back into the reserves. Remarkably, that spell in the second XI lasted three seasons as Bursell never made another appearance prior to joining Goole Town in 1956. He later played for Bridlington Trinity.

Bursell died tragically young in July 1973.
