397 Ken White

Biography

Ken White had spent his formative footballing years in the armed forces during World War Two, representing the Army in Burma, and after a short spell at Huddersfield Town he had impressed at his home town club Selby Town. He joined the Tigers in December 1947 as a striker who impressed with a hattrick for City’s reserves, but within four months Raich Carter was appointed player-manager and a series of high profile signings limited Ken’s first team chances. He showed his versatility during two seasons in the reserves, fulfilling several forward and defensive roles, and played for the first team in Summer 1948 friendly tour matches in Denmark and Sweden. He made his only senior appearance in February 1949 at right half, replacing the absent Jimmy Greenhalgh, but left the club in the 1949 close season.

White signed for Scarborough Town in August 1949 and quickly re-established his striker credentials, scoring 19 goals within the first three months of the 1949/50 season playing alongside another ex-Tiger George “Spud” Murphy. He assisted Scarborough to lift the Yorkshire League Challenge Cup in May 1950, the final allowing White to return briefly to Boothferry Park. In July 1950 he joined Goole Town and in 1951 he rejoined his hometown club Selby Town, scoring plenty of goals and combining amateur football with his profession as a painter and decorator.

Ken died in July 2005 in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
