Biography
Centre half John Bryant Wright was born in South Shields, after serving the Royal Marines in World War Two he was playing local league football in South Shields when he was invited to join Hull City in the 1947 close season. He stayed at Boothferry Park for two years, playing regularly in City’s Midland League reserve side before making his senior debut on Christmas Day 1947. Wright appeared in the first team again a year later in an FA Cup tie, but he was unable to dislodge regular centre back Harold Meens and left the club in August 1949.
Wright joined Southern League side Dartford for the 1949/50 season alongside two other former City players Alec Corbett and Andy Conway. Wright appears to have stayed with the Kent club until December 1949, after which no further record of his career can be found. He later returned to his South Shields hometown where he died in August 2009.
