Biography

Sam Johnson was a six foot tall and stockily built full back who joined the Tigers in May 1947 as the club built a squad incrementally following the post-WW2 shutdown. Johnson played in the last two matches of that returning season and made sporadic appearances throughout 1947/48 at both right back and left back, his last appearance being one of the early fixtures in Raich Carter’s managerial reign. However Carter released Sam that summer and he dropped into non-League football with Scarborough.
Born in Barnton near Northwich, Johnson worked at – and played for – Northwich ICI prior to World War Two. He played for Northwich Victoria during much of 1946/47 season before attracting City’s attention in May 1947.
Johnson died in Goostrey, Cheshire in November 1994.
