Biography
Sam Johnson was a six foot tall and stockily built full back who joined the Tigers in May 1947 for a hefty £750 fee as the club built a squad incrementally following the post-WW2 shutdown. Johnson played in the last two matches of that returning season and made sporadic appearances throughout the 1947/48 season at both right back and left back, his last appearance being one of the early fixtures in Raich Carter’s managerial reign. Johnson also played occasional games in City Reserves’ forward line, such was his versatility. However Carter released Sam in May 1948.
Born in Barnton near Northwich, Samuel “Sam” Johnson worked at – and played for – Northwich ICI prior to World War Two and was a decorated footballer in Army representative teams during his wartime service. He played two games for Northwich Victoria in February 1946 while on leave from the Army and joined the Vics full-time in August 1946, a couple of weeks after his demobilisation. Sam was a popular figure at Northwich Victoria during the 1946/47 season as they competed in the Cheshire League, before attracting City’s attention in May 1947.
Sam played regular Midland League football for Scarborough during the 1948/49 season while his professional registration was still retained by Hull City. Johnson later returned to live near his Cheshire roots and died in Goostrey in November 1994.
