375 Ted Alberry

Biography

Centre half Ted Alberry joined Hull City in April 1947 and made his only senior appearance in late May 1947 as Major Frank Buckley shuffled the substantial squad he had assembled for the Tigers’ first League season after World War 2. Although a defender by trade, Alberry started his only City match at centre forward and failed to impress. He stayed with City for the entire 1947/48 season but played exclusively in the Reserves and moved on in the 1948 close season.

William Edward “Ted” Alberry was born in Doncaster and worked as a teenage joiner at a local colliery prior to the start of World War 2. Towards the end of the war Alberry joined Doncaster Rovers and played in three wartime matches, adding a wartime match for Leeds United in October 1945. In May 1946 he joined Division One side Leeds United but spent the whole season in the reserves prior to joining Hull City in April 1947.

Alberry was released by the Tigers in the 1948 close season and in August 1948 he signed for Midland League side Gainsborough Trinity. Alberry played regularly for Gainsborough but he lasted only one season, joining Yorkshire League side Brodsworth Main for the 1949/50 season. Alberry remained living in Doncaster and died in the Spring of 1978.
