Biography

Goalkeeper Joe Carter had a short spell at Notts County prior to signing for Hull City in August 1946, ahead of the return of the Football League after World War Two. He competed with Billy Bly and Cyril Hannaby for the first team goalkeeper’s shirt and his time came in January 1947 in a FA Cup replay at Blackburn Rovers. Making his debut in front of a 30,000 gate, Carter was unable to prevent a 0-3 defeat but he retained his place for five further games, keeping two clean sheets.
Carter joined Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in March 1947, a year later in August 1948 he signed for Bradford City before disappearing from view. He later settled in Hemel Hempstead in Buckinghamshire where he died in December 1978.
