359 Bert Wright

Biography

Forward George Albert “Bert” Wright had the start of his football career hampered by World War Two. A chemist by trade, Wright was serving in the RAF during the war when he began playing wartime fixtures for Cardiff City. He also made guest appearances for Stoke City and Port Vale – in March 1946, shortly after his demobilisation, it was rumoured that Wright would sign for the Valiants in time for the resumption of the Football League the following August.

However Hull City swooped for Wright in late September and he scored on his debut against York City. After three more appearances at both inside left and inside right, by November 1946 Wright was out of the team and soon decided professional football was not for him – so he returned to his family business in Sheffield. He remained in Sheffield for a further 50 years and died there in August 2000.
