352 Peter Cook

Biography

Versatile forward Peter Cook joined the Tigers in June 1946 after playing for junior clubs Kingston Wolves and Wath Wanderers (the latter a feeder club for Wolverhampton Wanderers) during the latter stages of World War Two. He was born and raised on 21st Avenue in West Hull and attended Endike Lane School, his father was former Hull KR rugby league player Jimmy Cook. The Football League resumed in late August 1946 and Cook made his City debut at outside left in early September. He waited until January 1947 for his next appearances, when he was selected at centre forward for an FA Cup tie against First Division Blackburn Rovers. Peter rewarded City manager Frank Buckley by scoring the Tigers’ only goal in a 1-1 draw. Cook also started the replay five days later, which City lost 0-3, and the next League at Rotherham, which the Tigers lost 0-2. A few weeks later he joined Scarborough Town on loan and scored several goals in the Midland League.

Returning to the Tigers for the 1947/48 season, Cook started three of the first four games of the season at outside left but then dropped out of the side and again joined Scarborough Town on loan in November 1947. Cook finally joined Scarborough permanently in August 1948 and he rewarded the East Coast side with 27 goals in the 1948/49 season. This form led to Cook joining Bradford City for the 1949/50 season but Peter managed only one start for the Bantams and joined Crewe Alexandra in August 1950. In three seasons Cook started just over 50 games for the Railwaymen and scored six League goals, before being transfer listed and leaving in May 1953.

Cook then enjoyed a three year goal spree in the Lincolnshire non-league scene. He joined Boston United for the 1953/54 season and scored 28 goals, then added a further 24 goals in the Midland League for Grantham Town in 1954/55 season. He also scored regularly for Gainsborough Trinity in the 1955/56 season and joined Spalding Town in August 1956, at which point his playing days came to a rapid close. Cook was employed as a delivery driver in Hull when not playing football in November 1960 he collapsed and died at the tragically young age of 33.
