321 Jack Hardy

Biography

John Henry “Jack” Hardy was a left half who joined the Tigers in July 1937, strengthening the defence of a team trying to gain promotion from Division Three North. He served the first eleven reliably for two seasons, setting up attacks on the left flank as well as defending diligently. He left City in the summer of 1939.

Born in Chesterfield, Hardy played in local junior football in Derbyshire, then had a spell with Unstone FC near Sheffield before joining the professional ranks at Chesterfield in December 1934. In his first full season, 1935/36, Hardy won a Third Division North champions medal. He made 48 league starts in two and a half seasons before transferring to Hull City in 1937.

Hardy joined Lincoln City in May 1939, but his senior appearances for The Imps were immediately interrupted by the commencement of World War 2. Hardy played in wartime friendly leagues for both Lincoln and Doncaster Rovers. When the war was over Hardy became player-coach of Lincoln’s A team. He died in Lincoln in 1978.
