314 George Baldry

Biography

Outside right George Baldry joined the Tigers in May 1936 on semi-professional terms – training three days a week with Hull City, working in his family’s fish merchants on Grimsby Docks by day and playing saxophone for a local dance band by night. Although signing by manager David Menzies it was only after Menzies tragically died in service and Ernest Blackburn took over the reins at Hull City that Baldry made his debut in January 1937. He then started the last four games of the 1936/37 season, scoring in the final two matches against Wrexham and Darlington. Despite this fine finish to the season Baldry was not offered terms by the Tigers that he deemed acceptable and he left the club in the 1937 close season.

George William Baldry was born and raised in Cleethorpes and played amateur football for Humber United before joining Second Division side Grimsby Town in August 1933. Baldry served the Mariners’ reserves for two seasons as they won the Second Division title in 1933/34 season and finished fifth in the top flight in the 1934/35 season. Baldry finally made his first team debut for Grimsby in November 1935 and scored his first goal for the club a week later in a 6-0 thumping of Brentford. Between Christmas Day and early February Baldry scored seven goals in eleven starts including two goals against Port Vale in the FA Cup Fourth Round. He played in every round as Grimsby reached the FA Cup semi final, losing to Arsenal at Leeds Road, Huddersfield. His ninth and final goal for Grimsby in 26 senior appearances came against Aston Villa in April 1936.

When Baldry left the Tigers in 1937 he commenced a short tour lower league football, spending the 1937/38 season in the Midland League with Scunthorpe United, the 1938/39 season with Southern League side Chelmsford City then beginning the aborted 1939/40 season back in the Midland League with Shrewsbury Town. Baldry spent the Second World War in Essex and made further wartime appearances for Chelmsford City. By 1947 he was working for Marconi’s, the wireless radio manufacturer based in Chelmsford. Staying in Essex for the rest of his life, Baldry died in Southend in October 1987.
