Biography
Inside forward Alex Sharp joined the Tigers in October 1935 as manager Jack Hill struggled to arrest plummeting form. City paid £1,200 for Sharp and he netted on his debut against Doncaster, but the Tigers lost 2-3. Only when Sharp scored his fourth goal for City in mid December was that in a game the Tigers won, sealing a 3-2 victory over Swansea. That was Sharp’s last goal for City and as he drifted out of the side, the Tigers went on a run of 18 defeats in 22 games that saw Jack Hill resign and returning boss David Menzies get off to the worst possible start. Sharp failed to net in seven starts for Menzies and he was dropped before the season end and released in the 1936 close season.
Sharp was born in Glenbuck, an Ayrshire mining village best known as the home town of Liverpool legend Bill Shankly. Sharp played junior football for Dundee Violets before joining East Fife in 1932. He spent two years with the Fifers and showed enough promise to entice Division One side Blackburn Rovers to recruit him in November 1934. He made nine appearances and scored once in 11 months at Ewood Park, before he moved on again to Hull City.
Alex joined Falkirk in September 1936, making 61 appearances in two seasons. He joined Raith Rovers for the 1938/39 season but football was suspended for World War 2 after that season and Sharp did not play professionally again. He died in March 1992 in Harrogate and was buried at Campbelltown in Argyllshire.
