Biography

John McPheat was born in Longriggend, a mining village near Airdrie to the east of Glasgow. He came through the Scottish junior football scene with Shieldhill Thistle and prominent feeder club Rutherglen Glencairn. When Rutherglen won the Glasgow Cup in May 1935 McPheat scored the first goal in a 2-1 victory, which drew him to the attention of senior clubs. He signed for Jack Hill’s Hull City in mid September 1935 and made his first team debut three weeks later after impressing in the Reserves. He spent two months in the City first team that coincided with one of several poor runs of results that characterised Hill’s tenure as City manager. He dropped out of the first team at the end of November, made two more appearances during the winter months but was not used when new manager David Menzies returned to the Tigers in late February 1936.
McPheat was given a free transfer by Hull City in May 1936 and joined Surrey-based Southern League side Guildford City. He remained with Guildford for thirteen years, playing alongside another ex-Tiger Stanley Denby for most of that time. McPheat played occasional wartime fixtures for Aldershot during World War Two, and was given a benefit match by Guildford City after his retirement in 1949. McPheat eventually returned to the Airdrie area, which is where he died in 1974.
