291 Leo Dunne

Biography

Defender Leo Dunne joined Hull City in June 1935, a few weeks after he won two international caps for Ireland while at Manchester City. The 1935/36 season was one of great transition for the Tigers that ended in relegation to Division Three North, and Leo’s role in that was on the margins. He started the first 5 games of the season at right back but was soon replaced Welshman John Quantick. Dunne played only three more times in the winter months of 1936 and was released in the 1936 close season.

Dublin-born and raised, Leo Christopher Dunne started his career at Shamrock Rovers before quickly moving on to St Marys United. In 1928 he joined Drumcondra as the Dublin side joined the League of Ireland. Sporting the nickname “Ducky” Dunne, Leo played for the Drums until 1933 when he moved to England and joined Manchester City. Dunne impressed the Maine Road management but he made only three first team starts in two years before joining the Tigers in 1935.

Dunne returned to Ireland in 1936 joining Shelbourne, and he later returned to Drumcondra where he played until 1940. At some point during or after the war he moved back to England and settled in Swindon, where he died in 1990.
