27 Patrick Lavery

Biography

Outside left Patrick Lavery joined City in June 1905 in readiness for the start of the club’s first league season. He was unable to establish himself in the first team, having to wait for his debut until the October 1905 FA Cup tie against Denaby United played the same day as a League match against Manchester United. He played in two league matches during April 1906 but left City shortly afterwards.

The biographical details of Patrick Lavery are a matter of some confusion on the internet and in City texts. He is widely listed as born in 1884 (which is correct, making him 21 when he debuted for City) and killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915. However records and a gravestone show the young man called Patrick Lavery who died that day in 1915 was 19 years old, thus born in 1896 – not our man. Below is a slightly different, but no less tragic, life story for what we believe is the Patrick Lavery who played for Hull City.

Lavery was born in Walker, in the east end docklands of Newcastle Upon Tyne, but his childhood was spent in Tyrone, Northern Ireland and Blackhill, on the edge of Consett in County Durham. His football career started at Gateshead FC prior to signing for Hull City in July 1905.

On leaving City Lavery played for West Stanley, South Shields Adelaide (newly elected to the Northern Alliance), Bedlington United and Coxlodge Villa. By 1911 he was living in Blaydon on the south bank of the River Tyne, in 1914 he was working as a platers’ assistant in the Armstrong Whitworth shipyard on the north bank of the Tyne in Newcastle. He enlisted to the war effort in 1915 and joined the Yorkshire Regiment. Patrick was badly injured during the war (his brother Johnny was killed in action in 1916) and was discharged in 1919. He died in May 1922 while still living in Blaydon.
