Biography
George Arthur Atkinson was a Goole-born outside right who joined Lincoln City at the age of 21 after playing junior football for Goole LMS and Goole Town. He joined the newly promoted Tigers in June 1933, made his debut on his 24th birthday but spent just one season at Anlaby Road, starting only five Division Two games and returning no goals.
In June 1934 Atkinson joined Mansfield Town where he had a far more successful time, making 120 appearances and scoring a double figures haul of goals in each of his three seasons. In 1936/37 Atkinson was a prominent supplier of chances to Stags forward Ted Harston, who scored a remarkable 55 goals in 41 league starts – Arthur himself supplied a further 10 goals. Even more remarkably, despite these scoring exploits Mansfield finished only 9th in Division Three North – terrible defending!
Atkinson spent 1937/38 season at Southport where he contributed 7 goals in 37 starts. He then returned to the Humber Estuary badlands and saw out his career playing for Thorne Colliery.
By 1939 Arthur was back living in Goole with his parents and working as Assistant Coal Foreman for a colliery traffic department. Atrkinson died in Goole in July 1983.
