Biography
Frederick Wright was born in Ruddington to the south of Nottingham and was associated with Notts County as a teenager, playing for the magpies first team just once during the 1928/29 season. In September 1929 he signed for Grantham Town and in November 1930 he joined the Tigers at a time when the City squad was being rebuilt after the shock relegation at the end of the 1929/30 season. Wright was backup to first team full back George Goldsmith and played just twice in March 1931 before leaving the club in the 1931 close season.
Fred’s League registration was still held by Hull City, at the time players could not join another League club unless the transfer fee demanded by his last club was met. Wright appealed the scale of this fee to the Football League to no avail, which left him hamstrung – he had no contract at Hull City yet could not join another League side. Wright therefore returned to the Midlands and dropped into the non-league scene, joining Midland League side Loughborough Corinthians at the start of the 1931/32 season. However within a few weeks he had given up the life of a footballer and joined the Leicester City Police force. He was a stalwart left back for the City Police football team between 1931 and 1938. Fred died in his home town of Ruddington in December 1955 at the age of just 47.
