Biography

Michael William ‘Mick’ Carney was born at Beverley Barracks in Beverley to a soldier father. Michael himself joined the armed forces at the age of fourteen and initially served the Liverpool Regiment before joining the East Yorkshire Regiment as a Drummer and returning to live at his place of birth.
In the early years of the twentieth century Carney played local league football for both Beverley Town and Beverley Barracks, for whom he was a renowned centre half. He also played a supporting role in the Hull City’s inaugural 1904/05 season that comprised a series of friendlies and FA Cup ties, starting one friendly game against Gainsborough Trinity in April 1905.
He was playing for Beverley Town in October 1905 when he impressed in a game against City’s Reserves and was selected to make his only senior Tigers appearance a week later in an October 1905 FA Cup tie against Denaby United, which was played the same day that City’s first eleven took on Manchester United in a Division Two match.
Carney never played for the City senior side again but continued to occasionally turn out for the Reserves, while also playing for his two Beverley-based local league sides. In March 1906 he was selected for an East Riding FA XI.
By 1921 Carney had left the Army and was working as a carter for the Dalton Hall Estate in South Dalton, a few miles north of Beverley. Later in life Carney lived off Seamer Road in Scarborough, close to Scarborough FC’s ground. He died in Scarborough in October 1959.
