224 Robert Fawcett

Biography

Stocky forward Robert Fawcett signed for the Tigers in May 1929 to provide support on the right side of City’s attack, but found first team chances few and far between. Only when City were embroiled in an FA Cup run that took the Tigers to the semi-final was Fawcett turned to, starting the three League games between the Sixth Round Replay win at Newcastle and the Semi-Final draw against Arsenal. Fawcett was used three more times in the 1930/31 season with little success and he left the club in the 1931 close season.

Robert Elliott Fawcett was born in Bensham near Gateshead but raised across the Tyne Valley at Benwell in the west end of Newcastle. It appears he only came to football in his mid-20s, playing for Wearside works team Usworth Colliery and working at the Newcastle greyhound track. He left Usworth in 1929 to join the Tigers.

Fawcett spent 1931/32 season at Northern League side Shildon before switching to North Eastern League side Newcastle East End. Between November 1932 and January 1933 he played for Coleraine in Northern Ireland but was quickly released and returned to Newcastle East End. He played for North Shields at the start of the 1934/35 season but left by November citing work pressures. By 1939 he was living back in Benwell, working as a tailor and joining the Durham Home Guard. He died in 1972.
