Biography

Left sided forward Harold James March was born at Gamston, south of Retford in Nottinghamshire, and grew up at Cottam, a rural village beside the River Trent east of Retford. A professional soldier with the Kings’ Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, March joined Hull City in August 1929 as an amateur shortly after his Army demobilisation. He started three League games between November 1929 and February 1930, then made five consecutive starts towards the end of the season as the Tigers hurtled towards relegation while reeling from a FA Cup run that took them to the semi-final and a controversial defeat to Arsenal.
Harold was granted a free transfer in September 1930 and joined Lincoln City. He had a run in the Imps’ first team during March and April 1931, scoring five goals in six games for the Division Three North side. The 1931/32 season saw March start only one match, an FA Cup defeat to Luton Town in December 1932 that drew his senior career to a close. He played for Grantham Town at the start of the 1932/33 season before disappearing from footballing view. By 1939 he was living in Shoeburyness, Essex and working as a milkman. He later returned to Lincoln where he died in July 1977.
