220 Philip Cartwright

Biography

Winger Philip Cartwright spent 1929/30 season at Hull City, starting the majority of games during the first three months of the season, then dropping out of the team in late November before returning in late March. His return came in the FA Cup Semi Final replay against Arsenal played at Villa Park, his only appearance in that famous Hull City cup run. With the Tigers relegated at the end of the season, Cartwright moved on to maintain his Division Two status.

Born in Scarborough, Cartwright played for his local side as a teenager before being snapped up by Middlesbrough in March 1925, making his debut twelve months later. Philip suffered a serious injury shortly after his Boro debut and in May 1927 he joined Bradford Park Avenue to rebuild his fitness. In his first season, 1927/28, he made 16 starts and assisted Bradford to the Division Three North title. He made only a handful of starts in his second season and joined Hull City in the 1929 close season.

On leaving Hull, Cartwright joined Lincoln City and for three seasons he shone as a first team regular and a handy goalscorer. He was a near-ever-present in 1931/32 when the Imps were crowned Division Three North champions, the second time Cartwright achieved that accolade. He left Lincoln in July 1933 for Bournemouth, but after only seven months he had returned north to Scarborough. He spent the opening month of 1934/35 season at Carlisle United, then switched to Rotherham United where he spent two seasons. He joined Mansfield Town in 1936 but by now was not being picked in the first team and he retired in 1937.

Cartwright settled in Wakefield after his football career and died there in September 1974.
